After 40 years of advising people on how to manage their land for wildlife I thought it was time to have a go myself. We decided to take the plunge just as Covid hit making travel and viewings tricky. The plan was to move south and west, South Wales was a favourite. So 2021 found us moving north and east, back to Lincolnshire, the county I left when I went to university, the best laid plans!
We now have 4 acres of grassland in the flat coastal plain near Mablethorpe. 2 acres is managed as hay meadow, the other 2 acres is very uneven and we manage that as pasture. There’s a heavily shaded pond which we are trying to open up a bit and deepen the channel running from it into the nearby drain so that we can keep as much water on the site as possible for the longest time. In the winter there are numerous other temporary ponds, sometimes not drying out until early summer.
It is very much a labour of love trying to increase the wildflowers in the meadow and improve the water features. We have invested in some small kit to cut and bale our own hay and managed to find a local market for the small round bales.
All I can say is that it is a lot easier advising other people than actually doing the work but it is incredibly satisfying!
