Situated in the Ancholme Valley which has been transformed over the past few centuries through extensive drainage and intensive agriculture, Wild Wrendale took its last harvest in 2019. With heavy clay soils, the farm was not well suited to growing crops. With the help of beavers, the ambition is to restore some of the lost wetland, as well as allow the formation of scrub and wood pasture mosaics across the site. In a short space of time, the results have been astonishing. 26 species of butterfly have been recorded, from 13 species when the land was being farmed, 24 species of Odonata and 90 species of birds, including snipe, curlew, marsh harrier, lapwing and short eared owl.
